Department of Data Science and Engineering IISER Bhopal

BS Programme

IISER Bhopal offers a 4 year BS programme in Data Science and Engineering since 2019 onwards. The DSE BS programme is highly interdisciplinary and provides exposure to students to handle data, have rigorous understanding on different tools and techniques to perform analytics on the data and the most focal point is that the program offers domain knowledge in natural science, economic sciences and engineering sciences. The fusion of domain knowledge with the scientific rigour to provide solutions drives the DSE students to be highly attractive to industry and academia.

The DSE programme is part of the institute’s BS programme in Engineering Sciences. A student can enter into DSE program from Natural Science, Economics Science and Engineering Science streams. The DSE follows a common cirriculam for the first year of the programme. In the 2nd year (pre-Major) curriculam, compulsory courses (9/10 credits) in each semester that are offered from various departments needs to taken. These courses are offered from the Mathematics, Economic Sciences, and EECS department. These courses expose students to various computational, statistical tools and techniques.

Based on the academic record and interest, students can opt for DSE Major at the end of 2nd year. Students from natural sciences, economic sciences and engineering sciences can apply for the DSE program. However, the prospective students need to ensure that the pre-Major compulsory courses for DSE Major are taken in the 2nd year.

The 3nd and 4th year will cover foundational and advanced courses that have computational components to give students sufficient practical implementation and programming experience. These courses will provide the required tools and techniques in Data Science to solve various problems that occur in different domains. In the 3rd and 4th years, the DSE program students need to take 64 credits of courses, of which, 32 credits must be from DSE courses. The students need to take 18 credits of project work. For Minor in DSE a student must take 18 credits of DSE courses.

Students who would like to pursue BS-MS need to opt for this before the end of 7th semester examinations. The student must take 1 course on Intellectual property (ECO500) during the program. The department encourages students to pursue research work in the industry to obtain practical exposure and employment opportunities. The department also initiates a communication channel with various industries in different domains.

PhD Programme

The Data Science and Engineering (DSE) department at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Bhopal is excited to introduce a PhD program in Data Science and Engineering in 2022. It is an interdisciplinary graduate program designed for students who seek to use advanced computational methods to solve complex problems using large datasets in diverse fields ranging from the basic sciences (physics, chemistry, mathematics, etc.) to biology, earth science, economics, health-care, social science and various engineering domains.

The objective of this PhD program is to nurture the data scientists to develop interests and skills to build innovative methods and applications to solve both scientific and social problems. The vision is to deal with fundamental concepts and techniques from the areas of mathematics (statistics, optimization techniques, etc.) and computer science (programming technologies, machine learning, database, etc.) for large-scale data analysis in a range of applied domains e.g., computational biology, geospatial data engineering, image and video analysis, intelligent healthcare, surveillance, text analytics etc.

The curriculum of this program is designed to achieve these objectives so that students will be exposed to a wider range of fields than in more standard PhD programs while working with our interdisciplinary faculty members. In brief, this PhD program in Data Science will prepare students to become leaders in data science research and help them to build outstanding careers in academia or industry.
